Plenty of people book a check-up but quietly let the hygiene appointment slide. It feels optional. A bit of a luxury, even. Something you can put off until things settle down.

Here’s the problem with that thinking: the check-up tells you what’s wrong, but the hygiene appointment is often where the prevention actually happens.

It’s Not Just a Polish

The phrase “scale and polish” undersells the whole thing. Yes, there’s a polish at the end. But the bulk of the appointment is about removing what your toothbrush physically cannot.

When plaque sits on your teeth long enough, it hardens into tartar (sometimes called calculus). The honest version: your hygienist will tell you what your mouth needs rather than sell you a schedule. Most people land somewhere sensible once they’ve had one proper clean and can feel the difference.
