There’s a particular worry that stops people booking a smile makeover, and it’s almost never about the dentistry. It’s this: what if it looks obvious?

Nobody wants the row of identical, too-white, too-perfect teeth that announces itself across a room. For most people the goal is quieter. They want to stop hiding their smile in photos. They want the chipped tooth gone, the gap closed, the years of coffee and red wine lifted — and they want it to still look like their smile, just on a better day.

“Smile Makeover” Isn’t One Treatment

Whitening to lift staining and even out tone

Composite bonding to repair chips, close small gaps and reshape teeth — added directly to the tooth, often with little or no drilling

Veneers for more significant changes to shape, colour or alignment

Invisalign to straighten teeth first, so the cosmetic work has a proper foundation

Implants or crowns where teeth are missing or heavily worn

The skill isn’t in any one of these. It’s in knowing which combination gets you the result you want with the least intervention possible.

Why the Order Matters

Here’s something that surprises people: the best makeovers often start with the least glamorous work.

If your gums aren’t healthy, cosmetic work won’t sit right or last. If your teeth are crooked, covering them in veneers means cutting away more healthy tooth than necessary — when a few months of Invisalign first could have done the heavy lifting and left the tooth underneath intact.

This is where Dr Saara Majid’s work with Invisalign often comes in early. Straighten first, then refine. It’s slower than going straight for veneers, but it’s gentler on your natural teeth and the end result tends to look far more convincing.

Dr Keiron Thompson takes a similar view on the restorative and cosmetic side, favouring minimally invasive work that preserves as much of your own tooth as possible. The instinct throughout is to add and adjust rather than grind away.

See It Before You Commit

The “what if it looks wrong” fear largely disappears once you realise you don’t have to take a leap of faith.

Using digital scanning and smile design, the team can show you a preview of your new smile before any treatment begins. You see the proposed shape, length and proportions on screen, and you get a say. Too white? Dial it back. Want the front teeth a touch longer? Adjusted there and then. You become the co-designer rather than a passenger.

For something as visible and personal as your smile, that matters. There are no surprises at the end, because you signed off on the plan at the start.

The Natural-Looking Result Is the Hard Part

Anyone can make teeth white. Making them look like white teeth — with the slight translucency at the edges, the subtle variation in shade, proportions that suit your face and age — is where the craft sits.

I cannot recommend this dentist highly enough! Kieron Thompson is the first dentist who understood and effectively addressed the issues I’ve had with my teeth for many years. His friendly manner and reassuring approach immediately put you at ease.In addition, I haven’t seen a hygienist for years having previously found the experience to be far too uncomfortable at other dentalSurgeries. As someone with sensitive teeth, I found hygienists to be rather rough. However the hygienist at Kirby’s, Esti Mayans, is an absolute miracle worker! She puts me completely at ease and I experience no discomfort whatsoever during her treatment. For anyone who is anxious about visiting a hygienist, you cannot go wrong with Esti!Also the receptionists are lovely and welcoming!Honestly - visiting a dentist has never been so pleasant! ????

I can’t recommend Dr. Farah enough! She is so kind, gentle and patient. She explains everything so clearly and takes time to make sure you feel comfortable. I had an appointment with Kieron for a general check up in December which was very thorough and put my mind at ease, and then had a hygienist appointment in January with Esti which again was so thorough and I actually found really enjoyable! I have been putting off a fairly routine appt with this dentist for a couple of years now. The lovely, kind Louise or the lovely Yamala makes me an appt. I then usually cancel with some excuse…. Although the last time was genuine… today I managed to pluck up the courage to attend my appt. Being a child of the 60’s and 70’s… my experiences with dentists at that time has left me with a massive phobia! Sara and Anna are amazing. They could see I was very, very nervous and put me at ease. This was my son's first trip to the dentist and it couldn't have gone any better. We received a warm welcome from the moment we stepped in and Dentist Kieron took his time to make him feel comfortable and spoke in a way that he understood. Very happy with my choice.

I've been coming to this practice for nearly two years and have experienced great service by the team. The receptionist, Louise, is really helpful and seems to genuinely care about the patients. The team are also great about following up and checking in after things like extractions or emergency appointments. Highly recommend!

This is one of the best practice I have been to. Louise is kind and friendly. Keiron is an amazing dentist who knows what he is doing. It was the most thorough examination I have had and every detail was explained to me. He gave me the options for treatments that I needed clinically and cosmetically which I really appreciate as many practices I have been to in the past would not explain both. Thank you to the team. I will be revisiting for treatment soon.

I'm very anxious when i visit the dentist, but Dr Thompson made me feel at ease and comfortable by talking to me through what was going to happen. He was very calm and patient with me. Would definitely go back for further treatments.

I honestly cannot recommend Kieran and the team at Kirby Dental highly enough. I had some extensive cosmetic dental work done by Kieran and I am over the moon with the results. Kieran is highly professional and knowledgeable whilst also being extremely calm and considerate at all times. It was the most comfortable I’ve ever felt in a dentists chair! Thank you for helping me to smile with confidence again!
