January is the month of ambitious promises. The gym membership. The meal prep Sunday. The commitment to finally, definitely, absolutely book that dental appointment you’ve been avoiding since 2023.
By February, most of these promises have quietly dissolved. The gym bag sits by the door, untouched. The Tupperware containers gather dust. And that dentist appointment? Still unmade, but now with an extra layer of guilt attached.
Here’s what’s interesting about dental resolutions specifically: they fail for completely different reasons than fitness or diet goals. Understanding why might be the difference between another year of avoidance and actually getting it done.
When your resolution to go running fails, it’s usually about motivation. You know how to run. You know where the park is. You’re just not doing it.
Dental appointments are different. The barrier isn’t motivation—it’s fear, shame, or both. You’re not avoiding the dentist because you’re lazy. You’re avoiding it because some part of your brain has filed “dental appointment” under “threat” rather than “healthcare.”
That’s not a character flaw. It’s often the result of a bad experience years ago, or simply the accumulated dread from too many childhood memories of the drill sound and that particular smell of a dental surgery.
Dr. Farah Rajabali, our principal dentist, has spent years working with patients who describe themselves as “terrified” or “phobic.” She’ll tell you that the anxiety is real, physical, and completely valid. Dismissing it doesn’t help. Working with it does.
Most New Year’s resolutions rely on willpower. You force yourself to do the thing you don’t want to do until it becomes habit.
This approach catastrophically fails with dental anxiety because you’re trying to use conscious willpower to override an unconscious threat response. Your logical brain knows the dentist is safe. Your nervous system hasn’t received the memo.
Telling yourself to “just book it” is like telling someone with a spider phobia to “just pick it up.” It fundamentally misunderstands the nature of the problem.
The resolution that works isn’t “I will go to the dentist.” It’s “I will address the specific barrier that stops me going to the dentist.”
Let’s be precise about what’s actually stopping you, because vague anxiety gets vague solutions.
You’ve convinced yourself that your teeth are uniquely terrible. That the dentist will be shocked, disgusted, or judgmental. That you’ll be lectured about how you’ve “let things go.”
The reality is more mundane. Dentists see neglected teeth constantly. It’s not remarkable to us—it’s just the starting point for a treatment plan. The patient who thinks their teeth are “the worst we’ve ever seen” is rarely even in the top ten that week.
More importantly, shame doesn’t help you. It doesn’t motivate better behaviour. It just creates another reason to avoid care. A good practice knows this and actively works to remove judgment from the equation.
Modern anaesthetic is extraordinarily effective. The injection itself is usually the only discomfort in most procedures, and even that can be minimised with topical numbing gel first.
But here’s the thing that often goes unsaid: if you’re someone whose anxiety makes your pain threshold effectively lower, or if you’ve had bad experiences with “it shouldn’t hurt” procedures that absolutely did hurt, that’s information we need to know.
At Kirby Dental, we can offer IV sedation for virtually any procedure. Not just extractions or implants—anything. If what’s stopping you is the fear of feeling something, sedation removes that variable entirely. You’re conscious but indifferent. Time distorts. An hour feels like minutes.
This isn’t admitting defeat. It’s using the right tool for the job.
Being reclined in a chair with someone’s hands in your mouth is inherently vulnerable. You can’t speak clearly. You can’t see what’s happening. You’re dependent on someone else to recognise when you’re uncomfortable.
The solution is surprisingly simple: establish a stop signal before treatment starts. Raise your hand, and everything stops immediately. No questions, no irritation, no pressure to “push through.”
Knowing you have that control—that you’re not trapped in the chair—often reduces the need to actually use it. The anxiety comes from feeling powerless. The stop signal returns power to you.
Dental treatment can be expensive, and private care even more so. If you’ve been avoiding the dentist because you’re worried you can’t afford what they’ll find, that’s a practical concern, not an excuse.
Two things help here. First, problems caught early are almost always cheaper to fix. The filling you avoid becomes the crown you can’t afford, which becomes the extraction you definitely can’t afford. Avoidance doesn’t save money—it costs it.
Second, finance plans exist specifically for this scenario. We offer 0% finance because we’d rather you got the treatment you need on terms you can manage than avoided care entirely.
Stop trying to summon the courage to book a dental appointment. You’re setting yourself up for the same failure cycle.
Instead, do this: book a consultation with the explicit agreement that no treatment will happen that day. You’re going to have a conversation. That’s it.
Tell the receptionist when you book: “I haven’t been in a long time, and I’m nervous. I’d like to talk through my options before we do anything.” Any good practice will not only accommodate this but actively appreciate that you’ve been clear about your needs.
Dr. Rajabali’s approach with nervous patients is built around this principle. The first appointment is about building trust and creating a plan, not diving straight into treatment. You get to ask questions. You get to understand what’s happening and why. You get to be a partner in the decision, not a passive recipient of treatment.
That conversation might reveal that things aren’t nearly as bad as you feared. Or it might reveal significant work is needed, but now you have a roadmap and can tackle it in stages. Either way, the monster under the bed has been turned into a manageable problem.
The problem with New Year’s resolutions is that they’re binary. You either keep them or you don’t. Success or failure.
Dental care doesn’t work that way. The “success” state isn’t perfection—it’s progress. It’s going from five years of avoidance to one appointment. From one appointment to a treatment plan. From a treatment plan to a healthier mouth.
January gives you permission to start fresh, but it doesn’t give you a deadline to have everything sorted by February. The resolution isn’t to fix your teeth by spring. It’s to take the first step in January and see where it leads.
If you’re reading this and thinking “I should book an appointment,” you’re halfway there. The other half is recognising that the barriers you face are real, not character flaws, and they have practical solutions.
Ready to have that conversation? Call Kirby Dental Practice on 0208 977 5939 or visit us at 53-55 High Street, Teddington. No treatment on the first visit unless you want it. Just a chat about where you are and where you’d like to be. Your teeth can wait another week—but they probably shouldn’t wait another year.
